I teach every class myself

I'm Gabriel. I have tutored maths in Bayside for seven years — more than 100 students, from primary times tables to Year 12 Methods. That experience shapes our focus on the upper-primary years: building the understanding children will need as maths becomes more demanding.

At Vellin, we find a useful starting point, strengthen missing foundations and keep building from there. I teach every class myself. The assessment, weekly practice and parent dashboard help me choose the next step and keep you informed as your child progresses.

At the assessment we pick the 3 to 5 skills your child most needs, usually in the one or two areas they're furthest behind in. They are real weaknesses, not easy ones picked to make the guarantee safe, and they go in writing before you start. Mastered means at least 80% on a fresh check with new questions at the right level, not the questions they've already practised. If your child hasn't got there by the end of term, we refund the term's fees.

You don't wait a term to find out. After four weeks you get a written progress report: your child's starting results, their results now, and which skills have improved. Classes are billed weekly, so if you're not happy with what you see, you can stop there.

Who are these classes for?

Our main focus is Years 4–6 students who need stronger maths foundations. They may be getting by at school but need help understanding methods, remembering what they have learnt or solving problems independently. Your child does not need to be far behind to benefit. The free assessment helps us discuss whether the class is a good fit.

What happens once their foundations are stronger?

We keep building on what your child understands, with new learning goals each term. The pathway develops number skills, fractions, decimals and problem-solving, then continues into secondary maths and algebra as they are ready. You can review whether to continue each term.

Can students outside Years 4–6 join?

Years 4–6 are our main focus. If your child is younger or already in secondary school, you can still enquire. We will discuss their starting point and whether there is a suitable group.

What is the assessment based on?

The Victorian Curriculum (Mathematics 2.0), published by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority — the same curriculum your child's school teaches to. Every question is mapped to a curriculum level and one of the six strands: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. We review the question bank whenever the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority updates the curriculum, and we cross-check it against the national Australian Curriculum as well, so the level we report is the level schools mean. Vellin is an independent program and is not endorsed by or affiliated with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

One term or two?

Most families start with one term. Every term carries the guarantee, so the only difference is whether you lock in Term 1 as well: two terms keeps $60 a week fixed and moves straight on to the next set of skills. Same classes, same price.

Where and when are classes?

Saturdays at Highett Neighbourhood Community House, 2 Livingston St, Highett: 2:00 to 3:30pm and 3:45 to 5:15pm. Groups are sorted by age and level, and we confirm your child's group after the assessment.

What happens between classes?

Short online practice, 15 to 20 minutes a few times a week, chosen for your child, on our own learning platform — the same one we use in class. Every idea has a short explanation with a picture and questions that follow it, and there are games and puzzles when the drill gets dull. A page for parents shows the days your child did maths, what they practised and what needs another go. It is free to use, and you can try it now without signing up.
